Depression & Anxiety During Pregnancy

For many women, being pregnant is difficult and exhausting. Some women are physically and emotionally uncomfortable throughout their pregnancy. Pregnancy is not always a joyous or welcome event. Many women feel ashamed or embarrassed if they do not feel happy during their pregnancy. About 20% of women experience depression or anxiety while pregnant.

The following are some of the symptoms you may be experiencing during pregnancy:

  • Persistent sadness
  • Low self-esteem
  • Difficulty sleeping (not due to full bladder or heartburn)
  • Constant fatigue, even after resting
  • Loss of pleasure in daily activities
  • Poor appetite
  • Irritability
  • Constant worrying
  • Rapid breathing
  • Increased heart rate
  • Hot or cold flashes
  • Chest pain
  • Suicidal thoughts or plan

Who is at Risk?

The following factors are believed to contribute to depression and anxiety during pregnancy:

  • Previous history of depression or anxiety
  • History of sexual abuse or trauma
  • Previous pregnancy loss due to miscarriage, stillbirth or abortion
  • Previous pregnancy, birth or postpartum difficulties
  • Family history of mental illness
  • Isolation, lack of social support
  • Severe PMS
